Sir Elton John might just have stirred up a new controversy while discussing Jesus, in an interview given to a U.S. magazine.
Elton John said in the interview that, “I think Jesus was a compassionate, super intelligent gay man who understood human problems”. He also told the magazine that, “Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East – you’re as good as dead”.
Elton John who himself is a champion of gay rights campaigns, also described to the magazine his gay relationship with David Furnish, whom he married on 21 December 2005. John is reported to have told the magazine that he fell in love with Furnish the first time they ever met. He also discussed about his previous relationships with younger men.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and the owner of the best selling song of all times, is set to face criticism and backlash of Church officials and Christians worldwide over his controversial statements. A representative of the Church of England replied to the comment by saying they shared the musician’s view that Jesus was compassionate and loving but the details of his personal life should be left to the experts.
It is also worth mentioning here that the 62-year old singer was also criticized for his remarks in a music magazine in 2006 where he suggested that he would love to ban religion completely as it encouraged hatred against gays.
